The Holy Synod elevated the community to monastic status in 1861; it was closed in the Soviet period and officially reopened in 1991, when the relics of St. Seraphim were brought to Diveyevo. According to the monastery’s official tradition, Mother Alexandra experienced visions of the Mother of God directing her to Diveyevo, which came to be regarded as a special “domain” of the Theotokos.
