Church of the Savior on Spilled Blood

The church is one of Saint Petersburg’s most visited religious monuments. Its architecture and vast mosaic cycle make it a nationally important work of sacred art and memorial culture. The church was created as a memorial to Emperor Alexander II at the place where he was mortally wounded on 1 March 1881.

The State Museum describes the Church of the Resurrection of Christ, popularly called the Savior on Spilled Blood, as a memorial to Emperor Alexander II. It was erected on the site where he was mortally wounded in 1881 and is especially noted for an exceptionally extensive program of mosaics covering the interior.

Its architecture deliberately draws on earlier Russian church forms rather than the Western classicism prominent in much of imperial Saint Petersburg. Today the church is managed as part of the State Museum ‘St. Isaac’s Cathedral’. Its sacred imagery and dedication remain important to understanding the building, but its modern public role is primarily that of a museum and protected monument rather than an ordinary parish church.
