Sacred Place Overview

About Saint Basil’s Cathedral

Identity, documented context and sacred significance.

The cathedral stands on Red Square and is both a major cultural monument and an internationally known symbol of Russia. The State Historical Museum describes it as a cathedral of ten churches in one. Built in 1555–1561 by order of Tsar Ivan IV to commemorate victory over the Kazan Khanate.

A church dedicated to Basil the Blessed was added in 1588 above the saint’s burial place. The cathedral preserves the burial and relic tradition associated with Basil the Blessed, a widely venerated Moscow holy man. The devotional significance is presented as Orthodox religious tradition.

The State Historical Museum identifies the building as the Cathedral of the Intercession of the Most Holy Theotokos on the Moat and describes its unusual arrangement as ten churches in one. Its interiors preserve decoration from several centuries, including frescoes, oil painting and icons. The museum also records that a church dedicated to Basil the Blessed was erected in 1588 over the place associated with his burial, which explains the popular English name.

Today it is visited chiefly as a historic monument and museum. Because it remains a sacred building with saintly associations, descriptions should distinguish Orthodox veneration from historical statements about events that can be documented independently.
