UNESCO states that the convent was founded by Grand Duke Vasily III in the 1520s and became closely connected with Moscow’s political, dynastic and religious history. The ensemble contains churches, residential buildings and defensive elements, and its oldest stone cathedral was built in 1524–1525.
In later centuries the convent was associated with women of the ruling and noble families, some of whom entered religious life there. UNESCO also emphasizes the architectural coherence of the ensemble and its relationship with the Moscow Kremlin. The site should be presented as both a historic Orthodox convent and a protected cultural monument, with its religious associations described separately from legends or later popular stories.
