Kul Sharif Mosque

Kul Sharif Mosque combines active religious use with major cultural and visitor functions inside the Kazan Kremlin. Its basement houses the Museum of Islamic Culture. The present mosque was constructed from 1996 to 2005 and opened as a major religious and cultural landmark of Kazan.

The Kazan Kremlin Museum-Reserve records that the present Kul Sharif Mosque was built between 1996 and 2005. Its design is contemporary but intentionally engages with Tatar-Islamic architectural forms, and the building now serves as one of the principal visual symbols of the Kazan Kremlin. The mosque contains separate prayer areas and a Museum of Islamic Culture.

Official rules require modest dress, including head covering for women, and prohibit photographing worshippers or religious ceremonies; tourist access may be restricted during services. The modern mosque commemorates the Islamic heritage of Kazan, but descriptions should avoid presenting it as the surviving fabric of the sixteenth-century mosque traditionally associated with Kul Sharif.
