Juma Mosque of Derbent

The mosque stands within Derbent’s historic urban fabric and represents the early establishment of Islam in the eastern Caucasus. UNESCO identifies an 8th-century mosque among the key religious remains of the inscribed city. The mosque belongs to the early Islamic period of Derbent following the Arab conquest.

Later repairs and rebuilding have altered the fabric over centuries while preserving its role as a central mosque. UNESCO’s documentation for historic Derbent identifies an eighth-century mosque among the major buildings inside the World Heritage property and describes it as one of the earliest mosques in the former Soviet Union.

The Juma Mosque therefore belongs to a much larger urban and defensive landscape whose history extends through Sasanian, Islamic and later periods. Its significance is not only architectural: it reflects the long-established Muslim presence in Derbent and remains a place of worship. Because UNESCO’s listed property covers the citadel, ancient city and fortress buildings as a whole, coordinates and heritage claims for the broader property should not automatically be treated as mosque-specific unless a source identifies them as such.
