About Grand Synagogue of Paris

Identity, documented context and sacred significance.

Grand Synagogue of Paris is in Paris, Île-de-France, France and is a principal historic synagogue of Paris and seat associated with the Chief Rabbinate of France and Paris.. Work on the synagogue began in 1867 under the leadership of Grand Rabbi Lazare Isidore and Gustave de Rothschild, with architect Alfred-Philibert Aldrophe.

The Franco-Prussian War and the Paris Commune interrupted construction. La Victoire was inaugurated in 1874 and opened to the public in 1875. It became one of the central institutions of Parisian Jewish religious life and maintains the Ashkenazi-Alsatian consistorial rite.

Its documented heritage status is Major historic synagogue of Paris. Religious life or devotional practice associated with the site includes Jewish communal prayer. Recorded observances include Shabbat and Jewish festivals and High Holy Days.

The synagogue’s own institutional history describes La Victoire as the largest synagogue in France. It remains a working congregation rather than only a historic monument, with services following the Ashkenazi-Alsatian tradition and with a long-standing role in the consistorial organization of Jewish religious life in Paris.
