Basilica of Our Lady of Pontmain

Basilica of Our Lady of Pontmain is in Pontmain, Pays de la Loire, France and is a marian pilgrimage basilica at Pontmain, associated with a reported apparition on 17 January 1871 recognized by the local bishop in 1872.. Children at Pontmain reported seeing a Marian figure on 17 January 1871. Bishop Casimir Wicart of Laval formally recognized the apparition on 2 February 1872.

On 29 May 1872 he entrusted construction of a sanctuary to the Missionary Oblates of Mary Immaculate. The sanctuary was consecrated on 15 October 1900 and was raised to the rank of basilica in 1905. The sanctuary presents the 1871 event as an apparition of the Virgin Mary, venerated under the title Our Lady of Pontmain.

This supernatural interpretation is stated as Catholic tradition and episcopal recognition. The chronology is unusually well documented by the sanctuary itself: diocesan recognition came just over a year after the reported event, and a permanent shrine was then commissioned. The site’s religious meaning is therefore best described through the Catholic themes of prayer and hope attached to Pontmain, without treating later historical events as proof of supernatural intervention.
