Basilica of Notre-Dame de la Garde is in Marseille, Provence-Alpes-Côte d’Azur, France and is a marseille’s emblematic Marian basilica, a historic pilgrimage site especially associated with sailors and maritime ex-voto traditions.. The first recorded chapel dedicated to the Virgin on the hill dates to 1214.

A fort was added from 1525. After the Revolution, worship resumed in 1807, and the present basilica was begun in 1853. Designed by Henry Espérandieu in a Romano-Byzantine style, it was consecrated in 1864; the monumental gilded statue of the Virgin was installed in 1869.

Polychrome 19th-century basilica with a richly mosaicked upper church, crypt and monumental gilded Marian statue. Its documented heritage status is Major Marian sanctuary and Marseille landmark. Generations of sailors and families have invoked “La Bonne Mère” for protection, leaving ex-votos in thanksgiving.
