Sacred Place Overview

About Annunciation Cathedral of the Kazan Kremlin

Identity, documented context and sacred significance.

The cathedral is both an active Orthodox church and a major monument within the Kazan Kremlin. A museum dedicated to its history operates in the crypt. Built in 1561–1562 by Pskov craftsmen Postnik Yakovlev and Ivan Shiryai on the site of a wooden church established in 1552.

It was restored in the late 20th and early 21st centuries and reconsecrated in 2005. The Kazan Kremlin Museum-Reserve dates the present Annunciation Cathedral to 1561–1562, when it was built by Pskov craftsmen on the site of an earlier wooden church established after the Russian conquest of Kazan.

The cathedral has been altered, damaged and restored several times, including major restoration in the late twentieth and early twenty-first centuries. Its surviving form combines an early white-stone core with later architectural additions. Within the Kazan Kremlin, the cathedral represents the long Orthodox history of the site and stands in close proximity to major Islamic monuments.

That coexistence makes the Kremlin important for understanding the layered religious history of Tatarstan without erasing the distinct traditions represented by each building.
