Amiens Cathedral

Amiens Cathedral is in Amiens, Hauts-de-France, France and is an uNESCO-listed cathedral and one of the largest and most accomplished Gothic churches in France.. UNESCO dates the principal construction of Amiens Cathedral to 1220–1288. Successive master builders Robert de Luzarches, Thomas de Cormont and Renaud de Cormont produced an unusually coherent High Gothic church whose nave and choir balance across the transept.

Later chapels and furnishings altered details without changing the essential medieval structure. Architecturally, the site is principally Gothic. Its documented heritage context includes Major Gothic cathedral; it is also recorded as World Heritage Site — Amiens Cathedral (1981).

UNESCO emphasizes the cathedral’s three-tier interior elevation, sculpted decoration and structural lightness, all achieved with remarkable continuity of design during the 13th century. The building has retained its religious function as well as its architectural integrity, so its importance is not limited to heritage tourism: it remains a cathedral shaped by medieval worship and still used for Christian liturgy.
