Basilica of the Sacré-Cœur, Montmartre

Basilica of the Sacré-Cœur, Montmartre is in Paris, Île-de-France, France and is a major Parisian pilgrimage basilica dedicated to the Sacred Heart, known for continuous Eucharistic adoration begun in 1885.. The basilica arose from the National Vow movement of the 1870s. Parliament declared the project of public utility in 1873, Paul Abadie won the architectural competition in 1874, and the first stone was laid in 1875.

Continuous Eucharistic adoration began on 1 August 1885. The building works were substantially complete before the First World War, and the basilica was consecrated on 16 October 1919. Architecturally, the site is principally Romano-Byzantine.

The basilica’s defining living devotion is Catholic worship of the Sacred Heart of Jesus and perpetual Eucharistic adoration. Religious life or devotional practice associated with the site includes Mass, Eucharistic adoration, and prayer. The basilica remains an active Catholic church rather than only a panoramic monument.

Continuous Eucharistic adoration, begun while the building was still unfinished, is central to its religious identity, while the National Vow and the parliamentary decision of 1873 belong to the documented political and devotional history of its foundation.
