Valaam Monastery

Valaam is one of the most renowned monastic centres of northern Russia and receives large numbers of pilgrims and visitors. Its official history describes it as a historic model and centre of monastic life for the northern region. The monastery’s exact foundation date is not securely established.

The official monastery history distinguishes old tradition from documented later history; Peter I ordered the monastery’s restoration in 1715, and modern monastic revival began in 1989. Valaam is associated with a long Orthodox monastic tradition and with revered ascetics including the founders Sergius and Herman in church tradition.
