Sacred Place Overview

About Cathedral of St. Demetrius, Vladimir

Identity, documented context and sacred significance.

The Cathedral of St. Demetrius is one of the finest surviving monuments of the Vladimir-Suzdal school. Its sculpted façades form one of medieval Russia’s most remarkable decorative programmes. Built in 1194–1197 as a royal church.

UNESCO notes the survival of 12th-century frescoes in the western part of the interior. UNESCO dates the Cathedral of St. Demetrius in Vladimir to 1194–1197 and describes it as a royal church of the Vladimir-Suzdal tradition. Its exterior is renowned for more than a thousand carved stone reliefs, while fragments of medieval fresco painting survive inside.

The cathedral is part of the serial World Heritage property ‘White Monuments of Vladimir and Suzdal’, recognized for the exceptional development of white-limestone architecture in northeastern Rus. Its importance is primarily historical, artistic and religious rather than pilgrimage-based. Descriptions should therefore concentrate on its courtly origin, sculptural program and place within the medieval architectural school, without adding unsupported relic or miracle traditions.
