Sacred Place Overview

About Raifa Monastery

Identity, documented context and sacred significance.

Raifa is one of Tatarstan’s best-known Orthodox monasteries and receives pilgrims as well as cultural visitors. The monastery’s official material identifies the Georgian Icon of the Mother of God as its principal shrine. The monastery traces its beginning to the early 17th century, when the hermit Philaret settled in the area.

It was restored to religious life in the post-Soviet period after decades of closure. The monastery’s official tradition venerates its copy of the Georgian Icon of the Mother of God as miraculous. Templestan should attribute that characterization to the monastery’s devotional tradition rather than state it as a scientifically established fact.

The monastery’s official history traces its origin to the early seventeenth century and identifies the monk Philaret as the founder. The ensemble was rebuilt after a destructive fire at the end of that century and continued to expand, with major churches added in the nineteenth and early twentieth centuries.

The monastery’s principal devotional association is with a copy of the Georgian Icon of the Mother of God, which the monastery describes in explicitly religious language. Such claims of miraculous power belong to Orthodox tradition and should not be presented as independently established fact. Closed in the Soviet period, Raifa returned to monastic use in the early 1990s and today functions as an active Orthodox monastery in Tatarstan.
