Grand Choral Synagogue of Saint Petersburg

The Grand Choral Synagogue is a functioning house of worship and a major Jewish communal landmark. Its official community history records its completion in the late 19th century and consecration in 1893. Construction was completed in 1888 and the synagogue was consecrated on 8 December 1893.

It became a central institution for Jewish religious life in Saint Petersburg. The Grand Choral Synagogue developed as the principal synagogue of Saint Petersburg’s Jewish community in the late imperial period. Its large prayer hall and distinctive Moorish Revival design reflect the public visibility achieved by the community by the end of the nineteenth century.

The synagogue was consecrated in 1893 and remains a centre for Jewish prayer, communal life and religious education. Because it is an active synagogue, its significance cannot be reduced to architecture alone: worship, festivals and community institutions are part of its continuing role.
