Cathedral of the Archangel, Moscow Kremlin

The Archangel Cathedral was the dynastic necropolis of Moscow rulers before imperial burials shifted to Saint Petersburg. Its tombs preserve a major strand of Russian state and religious history. The present cathedral was built in 1505–1508.

It replaced an earlier cathedral founded in 1333 and became the principal dynastic burial church of Moscow rulers. The cathedral is dedicated to Archangel Michael, traditionally regarded in Orthodox culture as a heavenly protector of rulers and warriors; the cathedral also contains revered princely shrines.

According to the Moscow Kremlin Museums, the present Archangel Cathedral was erected in 1505–1508 by the Italian architect Aleviz Novy. Its defining historical role was as the dynastic necropolis of Moscow grand princes and later Russian tsars, making the interior a record of both political succession and Orthodox commemorative practice.

The cathedral is dedicated to Archangel Michael, traditionally honoured in Orthodox Christianity as a heavenly protector. Today the building is part of the Kremlin museum complex. Its significance is best understood through the combination of architecture, royal burials, wall painting and ceremonial use rather than through unverified devotional stories.
